Grimshaw

The history of the Grimshaw's begins with Walter de Grimshaw of which we know very little. I do know that he was warden of Edisford and according to the annuls of Whalley died around 10th year Edward the 2nd (1316-7). Then in the History of Whalley I find the following paragraph- "Richard, son of Walter de Grymeschagh, grants the same for their prayers half an acre of land in villa de Eccleshull in an angle of Bymmecroft, lying near Le Hutlone, in frank almoigne, with timber for inclosing and building a barn. Witnesses, Henry de Lee tunc vic. (1276, 1277, 1283), Henry de Clayton tunc senesc., etc. (inbid. No. 38, p.104).

Looking down on Grimshaw from Belthorne.

View of Grimshaw facing west at the main junction. As you can see, there are very few houses.

View of Grimshaw facing east at the main junction. Apart from a farm on the right and the farm and house you can see on the left, that's almost all of Grimshaw.

View of Grimshaw facing north at the main junction. In the background and as mentioned on the signpost you can see Grimshaw Brook Mills. This paper mill has been there for many years.

The first mention of the Grimshaws was Walter de Grimshaw who's job was a caretaker at Edisford, some miles away. I hope to see if the main Hall or House belonging to the estate is still there.
